Community Water Sources Assessment
Date: 2026-06-18
On 18 June 2026, Francis Lubega Children’s Foundation conducted a field assessment of community water sources in Mawugulu Village, Maya, in collaboration with the Local Council leadership.
Location: Mawugulu Village, Maya yrs

About The exercise involved foundation representatives, local leaders and community members, and focused on identifying the main water sources, assessing their reliability and safety, and documenting the challenges residents face in accessing clean water. The assessment found that the village’s public piped water collection point was unreliable and frequently stopped supplying water, especially during the dry season. At the time of the visit, no water was flowing, and the collection structure showed signs of damage and poor maintenance, including cracks, stagnant water and accumulated debris. Because of these failures, many residents relied on an unprotected natural spring exposed to contamination from runoff, vegetation and animals. Community members reported that women and children often spend long hours collecting water whenever the piped system fails. This affects school attendance, household responsibilities and income-generating activities, while continued use of unsafe water increases the risk of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea and dysentery. The findings will guide future fundraising, partnerships and WASH interventions aimed at rehabilitating the piped system, repairing the damaged collection point and protecting the natural spring.

Impact Notes

The assessment produced documented evidence of the village’s water-access challenges and established a basis for future planning and resource mobilisation. It also strengthened cooperation between the foundation, local leaders and community members around the need for reliable, safe and sustainable water services.
